This One’s on Us: 5 Low-Calorie Cocktails
Unfortunately, doing what we love is not always good for us, whether it be binge-watching Game of Thrones, ordering one (or two) extra-large Domino’s pizza, or in this case, enjoying cocktails. It’s no secret that the secret in cocktails is sugar, and lots of it, but sometimes even the biggest indulger wants something a little lighter – and dare I say, healthier. Make happy hour, well, happier and enjoy some drink options that are sure to satisfy — with zero of the guilt.
- 1 cucumber
- 2 stalks celery
- 1 head romaine lettuce
- 1 small slice fresh ginger
- 2 green apples
In a juicer, blend all non-alcoholic ingredients together, until smooth. Pour into serving glasses and add vodka to taste.
- 1 cup watermelon (chopped)
- ½ lime (juiced)
- 4 mint leaves
- 1 fl. oz. rum (white rum)
- club soda
Blend together watermelon until smooth and pour into a glass. Muddle together lime juice and mint leaves in a small bowl and place on top of the watermelon juice. Fill the glass with ice and top with rum and club soda. If desired, garnish with mint leaves and a watermelon wedge.
Hint: If you like sweeter drinks add ½ tsp. of fine sugar.
- ¼ cup tequila
- ¼ cup fresh grapefruit juice
- 1 tbsp. fresh lime juice
- 1 tsp. sugar (more for rim of drinking glass)
- ¼ cup club soda
- Grapefruit wedge
Rub grapefruit wedge on the outer edge of the cocktail glass to wet, then rub the edge of the glass in sugar. In the glass, mix together grapefruit juice, lime juice, and sugar. Add tequila, club soda and ice, garnishing with a grapefruit wedge if desired.
Strawberry White Wine Spritzer
3-4 fresh strawberries (diced)
2 oz. white wine
- unsweetened seltzer (lime-flavored)
Fill cocktail glass halfway with ice, then adding wine and strawberries. Top with seltzer and lime juice and stir. Garnish with strawberries if desired.
Healthy Gin Martini
- dry vermouth
- 2 oz. gin (Bombay Sapphire Gin works well)
- cucumber (thinly sliced)
Combine gin, a dash of vermouth, and ice in a strainer. In a martini glass, place the cucumber slices down first. Strain the cocktail into the glass and enjoy.
Hint: Freeze the cucumber slices beforehand.
